⚗️ The Soul That Drinks

״נֶפֶשׁ״ — לְרַבּוֹת אֶת הַשּׁוֹתֶה

"Soul — to include the one who drinks." Reish Lakish's answer, three times on this daf.

On Chullin 120 everything changes state. Fat melts, bread dissolves, blood congeals, a carcass liquefies over fire — or rots in the sun. The Torah says eat; these people drank. Does the law follow the substance into its new form? Work the bench and stamp each verdict. Then step up to the forge, where the Gemara blocks derivation after derivation — and your job is to find the stringency doing the blocking.

act i · the bench

Change the state, stamp the verdict

Eight substances from the daf. Run the process the case describes — watch the flask — then choose the ruling the Gemara actually gives.

act ii · the refutation forge

Why did the Torah write it three times?

"Soul" appears by forbidden fat, by chametz, and by the bird carcass. The Gemara asks: drop one verse and derive it from the others! Each attempt is blocked by a stringency the sources share but the target lacks. You find the blocker.

act iii · the two lenses

Rabbi Eliezer vs. Rabbi Yehoshua

Teruma's liquid-law is derived from first fruits. But how much of the source case comes along with the derivation? Swing the lens and watch three real verdicts flip.

  • The opener you didn't play: can a hair count as "protection" for flesh when it rides on top of the hide — protection upon protection? Rabbi Yoḥanan says the hair pierces the hide and touches the flesh. Rav Aḥa objects: if hides are full of perforations, how do we ever write valid tefillin? Answer, from Eretz Yisrael: any hole the ink covers is not a hole (120a:2–5).
  • What are rotev and kifa? After Abaye's objections: rotev is fat that oozed from the meat and congealed — not eaten itself, but it joins the meat toward an egg-bulk for food impurity. Kifa, per Rav Pappa, is the spices (120a:9–15).
  • The chain for consecrated produce: tevel, chadash, shemitta produce, and kilayim arise on their own — but hekdesh needs a person's act of consecration, so its liquid-law needs a source: bikkurim is blocked, teruma is blocked, the two together are blocked, until teruma-plus-one-of-the-drinks forges (120b:3–13).
