Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch), 1804–1886
"Water, coffee, or tea without sugar or milk may be taken before prayers even after daybreak because there is no egotistic indulgence in doing this. Even on Shabbos or Yom Tov when you are obligated to recite Kiddush, you may drink these liquids before praying, without saying Kiddush." (Metsudah translation)

Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch), 1804–1886
On Taanit Esther, one who is weak "may taste a little before the Megillah, such as coffee and the like, in order to gain a little strength from the weakness of the fast."

Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (Chofetz Chaim / Mishnah Berurah), 1839–1933
Tea and coffee may be drunk before prayer so that one can concentrate and pray — especially in places where people are accustomed to them and the mind is not settled without them — but only without sugar and without milk.

Worth arguing aboutצריך עיון
- The rule against eating before davening is about gaava — attending to yourself before your Creator. The poskim who permit coffee argue it serves the davening rather than the self.
- Black coffee before Shacharit is broadly permitted; milk and sugar are the fault line. Ask what each addition changes in the logic.
- Note the direction of history here: as coffee became universal, the rulings moved from grudging allowance toward outright recommendation for kavana.
