May instant coffee or tea granules be added to hot water on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
One should be stringent and use only a Kli Shlishi. Even according to lenient opinions permitting a Kli Sheni, it is prohibited to pour directly from a Kli Rishon onto the granules — the water must be poured first, then the coffee added.
Some authorities permit adding instant coffee or tea to a Kli Sheni, but the stringent view requires a Kli Shlishi. The prohibition of bishul (cooking) applies, and adding granules directly under a Kli Rishon pour is universally forbidden; the sequence must be water first, then coffee.

2.2
May ground (unbrewed) coffee be prepared in a kli sheini on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Ground coffee may not be brewed even in a kli sheini on Shabbos. One should use a kli shlishi at minimum. Rav Ovadiah Yosef permits it for Sephardim in a kli sheini, but Ashkenazim are stringent.
Ground coffee is kali habishul (easily cooked). Many poskim hold all foods are kali habishul unless otherwise designated (Mishnah Berurah 318:42), so a kli sheini would cook it. Rav Ovadiah Yosef (Yabiah Omer OC 8:35) ruled roasted coffee beans are already fully cooked, permitting a kli sheini for Sephardim. However, the Rema (318:5) is machmir for the view that bishul achar afiyah applies even in a kli sheini, so Ashkenazim may not brew ground coffee in a kli sheini.
Sepharad · Ashkenaz Sephardim may rely on Rav Ovadiah Yosef (Yabiah Omer OC 8:35) and use a kli sheini. Ashkenazim follow the Rema and may not use a kli sheini for ground coffee.

May instant coffee (Nescafe) be prepared in a kli sheini on Shabbos, and what is OU policy?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
One may add instant coffee to a kli sheini. Igros Moshe permits pouring hot water directly onto instant coffee but is personally machmir to use a kli shlishi. Minchas Yitzchak permits a kli sheini by treating dissolved Nescafe as a cold liquid subject to bishul achar bishul (which is permitted in a kli sheini per Shulchan Aruch HaRav 318:12). OU caterers are instructed to transfer hot water to a kli sheini before adding instant coffee powder. If one uses a kli sheini for Nescafe, flavored Nescafe products may be treated the same way.
Igros Moshe (OC 4:74:16) permits pouring hot water directly onto instant coffee in principle, though he himself is machmir to use a kli shlishi. Minchas Yitzchak (1:55) argues that since Nescafe dissolves in hot water, it should be viewed as a cold liquid rather than a dry food, making bishul achar bishul the relevant concern — and reheating liquid in a kli sheini is permitted (Shulchan Aruch HaRav 318:12).

May Splenda (artificial sweetener) be added to hot coffee or tea on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Splenda should be added only to a kli sheini. Since Splenda is considered fully cooked, and since many poskim hold that an ingredient that dissolves in hot water should itself be considered a liquid (subject to bishul achar bishul), adding it to a kli sheini is appropriate and sufficient.
Splenda can be considered fully cooked (bishul achar bishul applies, not a new act of cooking). However, the concern raised by many poskim — discussed in Daf 23:7 (pg. 31) — is that an ingredient that dissolves in hot water should be treated as a liquid rather than a solid food. Since liquids in a kli sheini are subject only to bishul achar bishul (reheating already-cooked liquid), which is permitted, adding Splenda to a kli sheini is permitted. As Splenda also dissolves in coffee or tea, the same logic applies whether it is added to water, coffee, or tea.

May instant coffee be prepared in a kli sheini on Shabbos? (Az Nidberu — roasting concern)
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Stringent — additional reason beyond inedible-to-edible: the manufacturing process converts the coffee from cooked to roasted, so adding water constitutes re-cooking.
Shut Az Nidberu (1:35–36) raises an additional reason for stringency: the industrial process of making instant coffee powder transforms the coffee from its cooked state into a roasted state. Therefore, when hot water is added, this constitutes a new act of bishul (cooking something that was roasted), which is biblically prohibited even in a kli sheini according to many opinions. This is distinct from the simple bishul achar bishul analysis.
Shut Az Nidberu 1:35–36. Unique rationale: manufacturing changes coffee from cooked→roasted, making re-hydration a new act of bishul.

May milk be added to hot coffee on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Permitted. Since commercially sold milk is pasteurized (i.e., already cooked), adding it to coffee is only a case of bishul achar bishul for liquids, which is permitted.
Shemirat Shabbat Kehilchatah (1:55, footnote 157) permits adding milk to coffee on Shabbos. Pasteurized milk has already undergone a cooking process; therefore adding it to hot coffee does not constitute new bishul — it is reheating of an already-cooked liquid (bishul achar bishul for liquids), which is permitted.
May instant coffee be prepared in a kli sheini on Shabbos? (Shemirat Shabbat Kehilchatah)
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Permitted to make instant coffee in a kli sheini.
Shemirat Shabbat Kehilchatah (1:49) rules leniently, permitting instant coffee in a kli sheini. This aligns with the position of Igros Moshe and Minchas Yitzchak. MB 318:47 notes that kali habishul is cooked even in a kli sheini, but instant coffee may be treated differently given its dissolved/liquid character.
SSK 1:49. Cross-reference MB 318:47 on kali habishul in kli sheini; Pri Megadim leans lenient for kli shlishi.

May instant coffee be prepared in a kli sheini on Shabbos? (Be'er Moshe — stringent)
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Stringent — instant coffee should not be made even in a kli sheini.
Shut Be'er Moshe (2:21) is stringent because adding hot water to instant coffee powder transforms it from an inedible state to an edible/drinkable state. This constitutes a meaningful act of bishul regardless of whether the vessel is a kli sheini or kli shlishi, since the forbidden action is the transformation of the substance itself.
Shut Be'er Moshe 2:21. Contrasts with Igros Moshe and SSK who permit kli sheini.

What is the ideal method for making coffee on Shabbos that satisfies all halachic opinions?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Put coffee grounds and sugar into an empty cup (which will become a kli shlishi), then pour boiling water from a kli rishon into a second empty cup (kli sheni), and from that kli sheni pour (irui) into the cup with the coffee and sugar (kli shlishi). Since the water reaches the coffee only as irui from a kli sheni — effectively a kli shlishi — even if it is yad soledes bo, it is permitted according to all opinions.
The method produces irui (pouring) from a kli sheni onto a kli shlishi. The poskim hold that a kli shlishi does not cook even kali habishul, and irui from a kli sheni is treated as a kli shlishi. This satisfies even the most stringent opinions (Be'er Moshe, Az Nidberu) since the water never directly contacts the coffee as a kli rishon or kli sheni pour. "I have set Hashem before me always."1Psalms 16:8. This is a fundamental rule of the Torah and of the attributes of the righteous who walk before God. For we cannot compare a person's lifestyle, his activities and affairs when he is alone, to his lifestyle, and activities and affairs when he is before a great king. Similarly, his conversation and speech when he is amongst family or relatives, [cannot be compared] to what they would be in the presence of a king, because then he would certainly take special care that all his activities and conversations be refined and correct. How much more so when you contemplate that Hashem, the greatest of kings, the Holy One, blessed is He, Whose glory fills the entire world, stands above you and views your actions, as it is said: "If a person will hide in hidden places will I not see him? Says the word of Hashem, Do I not fill the heavens and the earth!"2Jeremiah 23:24. [Bearing this in mind] it is certain that you will immediately acquire a feeling of reverence and submissiveness for the awesomeness of Hashem, Blessed be He, and be ashamed [to sin] before Him. Also, while lying in bed you should realize before Whom you lay and as soon as you awaken you should remember the kindnesses of Hashem, Blessed be His Name, that were granted to you; that He returned your soul to you. You committed it to Him faint and weary and it was returned to you new and refreshed, enabling you to worship Hashem, Blessed be His Name, with all of your capacity and serve Him the entire day; because this is the essence of Man, as it is said in Scripture: "They are new every morning how great is Your faithfulness."3Lamentations 3:23. This verse teaches that every morning a person becomes a new creation, and he should give thanks with all his heart to Hashem, Blessed be His Name, for this (good fortune). While still in bed you should recite: I give thanks to You, living and everlasting King for You have restored my soul with mercy. Great is Your faithfulness. (Even though your hands are not yet clean, you may say this, since the name of Hashem is not mentioned.) You should pause slightly between the word chemlah "with mercy," and the word, rabbah "great." Yehudah son of Taima says: "Be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer and strong as a lion to do the will of your Father in heaven."4Avos 5:20. "Bold as a leopard" means, you should not be ashamed before people who mock you for worshipping Hashem, Blessed be His Name. "Light as an eagle" refers to what the eye sees. This alludes to the requirement to be swift to close your eyes to prevent the seeing of evil because the sight of evil constitutes the beginning of sin. The eye sees and the heart desires and the organs capable of action culminate the sin. "Swift as a deer" refers to the legs, for your legs should run to do good things. "Strong as a lion" is a reference to the heart, because true valor in serving the Creator, Blessed is He, emanates from the heart. He also sta
May hot water be poured onto instant coffee, tea, or cocoa on Shabbos? (Lenient opinions)
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Permitted to pour hot water directly onto instant coffee/sugar/cocoa even in a kli sheni.
Panim Meirot personally observed this practice in Ashkenazi communities without objection. Mor uKtzia and Ketzot HaShulchan hold that instant coffee powder (nems) is so finely processed that it is analogous to snow (שלג) — it dissolves rather than cooks, and therefore is not subject to bishul in a kli sheni. Az Nidberu (1:35-36, lenient side cited here) also permits. The dissolving-as-liquid argument (Minchas Yitzchak 1:55) is another basis: once dissolved it is a liquid subject only to bishul achar bishul which is permitted in kli sheni.
May hot water be poured onto instant coffee, tea, or cocoa on Shabbos? (Stringent opinions)
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Stringent: one should not pour hot water directly onto instant coffee/sugar/cocoa. The water must be placed in the cup first, and only then should the coffee be added on top.
Multiple poskim (Menorah HaTehorah, Torat Shabbat, Shevitat HaShabbat, Nishmat Shabbat, Machazeh Eliyahu, Maor HaShabbat, Birkat Yitzchak, Divrei Binyahu) hold that instant coffee/sugar/cocoa are kali habishul and cooking them even in a kli sheni constitutes bishul. Additionally, some raise the concern of bishul achar afiyah (cooking after roasting) since instant coffee has been roasted in manufacturing. The permitted method according to the stringent view is: place coffee+sugar in the cup first (empty/dry), then pour the hot water — this is irui (pouring) from a kli sheni onto a kli shlishi, which is permitted even according to stringent opinions.
Collected in Dor HaMelaktim Shabbat 5, siman 318 se'if 14, pp.61-63 (section לד). All stringent sources agree that the water-first method (irui from kli sheni onto kli shlishi) is acceptable.
What is Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach's nuanced position on instant coffee (nems) in a kli sheni on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Generally permits instant coffee in a kli sheni, but raises the roasting concern (bishul achar afiyah) as a reason for caution. Also rules that activating a coffee maker via a Shabbos clock such that water flows onto the coffee is problematic since the water is what causes the coffee to become drinkable.
GRSh"Z distinguishes: (1) The basic instant coffee in kli sheni is permitted on the grounds that the nems dissolves like snow (שלג), not a solid food being cooked. (2) However, he notes the concern raised by Az Nidberu 1:35-36 — the manufacturing process roasts the coffee, so adding water could constitute bishul achar afiyah (cooking after roasting), which some hold is biblically prohibited. (3) Regarding a Shabbos clock drip coffee maker: the water actively transforms the coffee from an unusable state to a drinkable state, which he views as more problematic than simply placing nems into already-hot water in a kli sheni.

What Shabbat concerns arise in preparing a cup of coffee?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Boiling coffee or tea may not be poured onto sugar in the cup; one pours the drink first and adds sugar afterwards (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 80:3). When pouring off coffee that has grounds (sediment) at the bottom, one must be careful not to separate completely — borer concerns (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 80:18); similarly, separating an egg yolk to mix into coffee implicates borer (Mishna Berura 319:59).
Pouring hot liquid from a kli rishon can cook (bishul) the sugar; decanting liquid from sediment, or separating yolk from white, is selection (borer) of food from waste or of two foods from each other.
Pour the coffee first, then add sugar — bishul concern
One should not pour boiling coffee or tea on Shabbat into a cup that contains sugar; rather, pour the coffee or tea first and afterwards add the sugar.
In the laws of borer (separating) on Shabbat, the Mishna Berura cautions against separating an egg yolk from the white by means of a utensil in order to beat it and pour it into coffee — separating two kinds of food is selection, to which the melacha of borer applies.

Does freshly ground coffee have the halachic status of a Keli Rishon, given that the heat in ground coffee (referenced in Mishnah Berurah 216:16) is generated by the grinding friction itself?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Rav Schachter rules: a vessel (or substance) heated by friction is treated with the stringencies of a Keli Rishon.
The Mishnah Berurah (216:16) references the heat found in freshly ground coffee. Rav Ferrell clarifies in the name of Rav Schachter that this heat is not residual external heat but is generated by the friction of grinding. Rav Schachter's consequent ruling: friction-generated heat carries the full chumros of a Keli Rishon. This has practical ramifications for: (1) basar b'chalav — if a hot coffee grinder contacts dairy residue, it may have keli rishon-level absorption implications; (2) Shabbos — grinding coffee fresh may produce keli rishon-status heat with consequences for items subsequently placed in the ground coffee; (3) general bishul — friction heat is not treated as a lesser heat source but fully equivalent to direct flame heating.
Cross-references: MB 216:16 (heat of ground coffee); the previous entry on ground coffee and Pesach/kemach concerns (Shtilerman/Peri Megadim). This ruling is transmitted orally from Rav Schachter and recorded in Ferrell's footnote 312 — treat as a b'shem omro rather than a published teshuvah.
Primary source: Rav Schachter ruling (b'shem omro via Ferrell fn.312) that friction-generated heat = keli rishon status; identifies MB 216:16 coffee heat as friction-sourced

Is there a tzovea (coloring) concern when adding coffee or tea to hot water on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Some poskim say one should put the coffee or tea in the cup first and then add the water, to avoid the appearance of coloring the water. Others permit adding it either way.
Tzovea (coloring) is a Shabbos melacha. When dark coffee or tea is added to water, it colors the water. Shaar HaTziyun (318:65) says one should add coffee/tea first before the water. Igros Moshe OC 4:74:18 discusses this in the context of bishul. Shevet HaLevi 9:71 and Betzel HaChochma 2:49 also address this. However, the primary concern of bishul may override the tzovea discussion.
What is the muktzeh status of coffee beans (whole/roasted/ground) on Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
Unground coffee beans — even if roasted — are muktzeh machmat gufo (set aside due to their intrinsic unusable state). Roasted AND ground coffee: disputed — some hold it is muktzeh, some hold it is not muktzeh.
Shut Darkei Yitzchak: Unground coffee beans have no Shabbos use and are muktzeh machmat gufo regardless of whether they are roasted. Once roasted AND ground, there is a machloket: those who hold it is muktzeh reason that there is no further preparation possible on Shabbos (it cannot be cooked on Shabbos); those who hold it is not muktzeh may rely on the view that bishul achar afiyah does not apply (roasted coffee can still be "cooked" — brewed — on Shabbos in a permitted way, giving it a potential Shabbos use). Footnote קכב cites Shlomi Yehudah ch.8:12 fn.22 on this machloket regarding bishul achar afiyah for roasted coffee.
Shut Darkei Yitzchak im Haarot Chayei Moshe (Kardi). The bishul achar afiyah question is the hinge: if roasted coffee cannot be halachically "cooked" further, it may be muktzeh; if it can (e.g. brewing counts as bishul), it has a potential use and may not be muktzeh.
Coffee beans [Coffee beans] that have not been ground, even if they are roasted, have the status of muktzeh machmat gufo. But roasted and ground coffee: some say it is muktzeh, and some say it is not muktzeh. [fn. 122] Fn. 122: Shlomi Yehudah (chapter 8, ot 12, footnote 22). And this is because they disputed whether the principle of bishul achar afiyah (cooking after roasting) applies. See there.

May a filter coffee maker be used on Shabbos by setting a Shabbos clock (timer) before Shabbos?
The bottom lineלְמַעֲשֶׂה
The article discusses the permissibility of pre-setting a filter coffee maker with a Shabbos clock. All preparations (placing coffee grounds and water) are done before Shabbos; the clock activates the machine automatically on Shabbat. The machine does not require any manual adjustment of heat, removing the concern of shema yachateh (lest one stoke the coals). The halachic status of the Shabbos clock mechanism itself is the central question addressed.
The question involves several issues: (1) whether pre-setting a filter coffee maker before Shabbos constitutes hatmana (insulation/delayed cooking) or bishul; (2) whether the Shabbos clock (שעון-שבת) is an acceptable halachic mechanism for activating appliances on Shabbat; (3) the shema yachateh concern — since the filter coffee maker maintains a fixed temperature and the user has no access to adjust it, this concern does not apply. The coffee grounds and water are placed before Shabbos; the machine simply executes the pre-set action. The Shabbos clock itself is characterized as a separate and independent halachic unit (חלק עצמו).
